week #3 Prensky Article

What did you agree with?
I agree that people of this generation have changed a lot, and that technology is the basis of this huge educational change. I find myself also agreeing with his points that many teachers teach in a way in which they find that worked for them, although it may be out of date and naiive for the teachers to think that. I have hard times comprehending with all the information taught to me in many classes and I can see how the teachers methods could have worked for them, but they do not for me. And having more options that are fun to learn would be a more useful way for me to retain the information. I again agree with him when he says that we need to find a way to integrate both legacy and future skills into the students of today. Both are very important I support when he speaks about students who tend to retain more information if they are having fun learning it through a game or creative fun way, most in which involve technology these days. I liked his point on weather to discuss if they should use certain technologies has now evolved into learning how to use these tools. From why to how, Prensky had many great points.
 What did you learn?
I learned the huge margin of data with how much time is spent on reading as compared to playing video games or watching TV. I knew it was big, but not that big of a margin! I also learned that our brains could be much different than generations before and that our thinking process has for sure been changed from our new technological way of life. There were also a few new terms with "Digital Natives" and "Digital Immigrants." All in all, I learned how significant the change in education has been in the last few yeas.
What does the article make you wonder?
This article makes me wonder if my "having a hard time with grasping concepts in lecuture and reading" is partly based on how my brain and mind works differently than those who i get taught by. Overall, I support the use of technology and using it in the classroom as tools and opportunities that we are blessed to have, but I wonder if Marc Prensky is trying to turn everything over to technology when it is so important to develop other basic skills in education which are very healthy for brain development and so much more.

  1. As you mentioned in the "What I Learned" paragraph, with the supposed shift in student's brain activity and growth how can we as educators develop stronger tools for teaching? I think that it is important to realize that students are growing up in a world bombarded by technology and media, yet we still have Standardized Testing and "paper" procedures. Therefore we must not neglect our duty as teachers to introduce both "old school" teaching styles and integration of technology. Just a thought. :)
